W. Flake Fairbourn

September 11, 1946 — September 18, 2019

William Flake Fairbourn passed away at his home in Elberta, Utah, peacefully in his sleep, Wednesday morning, September 18, 2019. He was born September 11, 1946, in Murray, Utah, to his parents Merle Leslie and Fern Flake Fairbourn. His early life was spent at his family’s dairy farm in Crescent, near Draper, Utah. His parents later moved their small, but growing, Utah family to southeastern Iowa, near the town of Keosauqua, where they continued to farm and milk cows.

Flake later returned back with his family to Utah where he graduated from Provo High School in 1964. He was later called as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Brazil-Sao Paulo North Mission. During the 1960s the Church only had two missions in Brazil. Flake was privileged to be in a group of missionaries that opened the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, for missionary work. Today, Fortaleza has its own mission and an LDS Church Temple. This mission was particularly meaningful to Flake throughout his life, and he was always prepared to share stories from his mission during lessons and church talks. Upon returning home he reformed his Portuguese into Spanish, and being bi-lingual served him well in many professional capacities and community relationships.

While attending Brigham Young University, Flake met Ann Bronson at a dance. They fell head-over-heels for each other and were married in the Manti LDS Temple September 14, 1968. From 1969 to 1986, to this happy union were born 10 children, five girls and five boys. Flake and Ann just celebrated 51 years of marriage.

In the fall of 1970, Flake decided to work for a semester instead of enrolling in classes at BYU. In November, the local draft board selected him for enlistment in the U.S. Army. He went to basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington, and later became an Army Ranger after finishing Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Flake completed his military service after a six-month assignment as a sergeant for guard units along the demilitarization zone (DMZ) at U.S. Army installations in South Korea.

Flake worked all of his life in the dairy industry, and for the last 25 years as a sales and service specialist for Giles Dairy Service, serving dairy customers in Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. From an early age, Flake nurtured a lifelong vocation for farming, and was especially fond of horses and cattle. His rural Iowa roots served him later in his adult years during the many trips he loved to take to Midwestern farms and horse auctions hosted by his Amish friends. He loved livestock and especially horses and horse trading.

Flake had an abiding testimony in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Throughout his life, he served the Church in many capacities, and most notably in Young Men’s presidencies, Elders Quorum presidencies, as a Ward Clerk, in Bishopbrics, as a High Councilman, and most recently in the Goshen Stake Sunday School Presidency. Undoubtedly, Flake’s favorite roles involved teaching assignments when he could share the gospel, and he delighted in the retelling of faith promoting experiences of his pioneer forebears and ancestors. He was also a frequent attender of the temple, and did much work therein.

Flake is preceded in death by his father, Merle Leslie Fairbourn; a sister, Rhonda Fairbourn Isaksen; a son-in-law, Scott Michael Kirkham; another son-in-law, Bradley Eric Taylor; and a son, Jordan William Fairbourn. He is survived by his wife, Ann Bronson Fairbourn, and nine of his children: Amy Kirkham, Blackfoot, Idaho; David (Barbara) Fairbourn, Laketown, Utah;  Clint (Tina) Fairbourn, Saratoga Springs, Utah; Heather Taylor, Santaquin, Utah; Holly (Jerry) Froman, Gilbert, Arizona; Lacey (Ryan) Williams, Sahuarita, Arizona; Zac (Rachel) Fairbourn, Santaquin, Utah;  Jesse Fairbourn, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Nellie (Mark) Edmonds, Santaquin, Utah.  He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Flake loved spending time with his many grandchildren, and traveled many miles to attend their special performances and school athletic events.

Flake is further survived by his mother, Fern Flake Fairbourn, Taylorsville, Utah, and seven siblings: Karmen (Jon) Fairbourn, Mendocino, California; Lynn (Brett) Blethen, Mountain Home, Idaho; LaDawn (Chris) Tice, Covington, Washington;  Loraine (Jeff) Urry, Cheyenne, Wyoming; James Fairbourn, Provo, Utah; Jed Fairbourn, Cheyenne, Wyoming; and Bryan (Cheryl) Fairbourn, Taylorsville, Utah.

Funeral services for Flake will be held at the LDS Church in Elberta, Utah on Monday, September 23, 2019. There will be a viewing at the church Sunday, September 22nd from 6:00-8:00 pm and again Monday from 10:00-10:45 am. Interment with military honors will follow at the Goshen Cemetery in nearby Goshen, Utah.
